Jacques Rancière’s The Ignorant Schoolmaster describes a theory of intellectual emancipation arising from the provocative claim that any students are perfectly capable of learning any subject effectively regardless of a teacher’s understanding or knowledge of the material being studied. The book presents a radical critique of how western educational methods create and reinforce inequalities of power between teacher and student, and between individuals and institutions, as students and teachers alike are trained that they must understand themselves as properly unequal individuals before access to knowledge and study can be responsibly authorized. Beyond its central critique, the book is a provocation for us to rethink how we conceptualize traits like intellectual capacity and exceptional talent as fundamentally personal inequalities, challenging us to reorient the ways we understand intelligence and skill to function in the practices of learning and teaching. The Ignorant Schoolmaster is a serious attempt to theorize how we might inaugurate intellectual freedom and equality even as the institutions around us work to foreclose those possibilities at every turn.
We’ll meet Mondays from 7-9pm at a pace that will be determined by all participants.
