The Writer’s Block in the Rivera Court is the premiere showing of a new documentary that was filmed at the Writer’s Block poetry reading held in the Rivera Court earlier this year. The footage captures creative reflections on Michigan’s prison system, poetic testimonies by juvenile lifers, and the day to day struggle of life behind bars as read by the family members and friends amidst the powerful and iconic imagery painted by Diego Rivera. The Writer’s Block is a creative writing program organized by the Hamtramck Free School, serving the residents of the Macomb Regional Correction Facility. (Directed by Katie Barkel, HD Video and Super 8, 2015, 76 minutes).
