Attributed as one of the most influential educators of the 20th century, Paulo Freire sought to change educational paradigms from those of subordination to those of collective liberation. The model which is common in our current educational system- coined by Freire as the “banking model”- is diagnosed by the author as one which reinforces authoritarian ideologies and alienates students from creativity and engagement. In a world where access to quality education is constantly under attack, and in a city where a business school is being named after a billionaire who reaps in millions of dollars in public assistance, it is crucial for us to examine strategies to escape the corporate stranglehold being placed on education. Through studying Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire, we hope to unlock strategies for collective liberation through new methods of teaching and learning.
