The Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility Advanced Poetry Workshop presents a reading and a launch of our yearly poetry anthology. Asia Johnson and Karmyn Valentine, two recent workshop poets, will give a reading and Q&A, followed by recorded poems read by each member of the workshop. We will also be launching our 2018 Workshop Poetry Anthology to browse and take home, featuring work by the 6 poets in the workshop.
About the Workshop: For the past five years, the Advanced Poetry Workshop has nourished our creative & personal evolution through the writing & study of poetry. Our collective attention to poetic form and experimentation is rigorous, allowing for a wide range of approaches to composition & construction. One of our many goals is to risk nonsense in the interest of making “new sense”—of ourselves, our language, our world, and our conditions. We seek to write poems that shock even ourselves, and seek to establish daily writing practices marked by honesty and intensity. The Advanced Poetry Workshop allows us to access richer contexts for communication, collaboration and study through a more expansive practice of using language innovatively. In addition, the workshop provides a space to voice and share interests & concerns, ideas & questions, while supporting & encouraging, critiquing & editing one another’s work as we move toward refining and publishing our poetry. This year, we have spent time reading, studying, and apprenticing ourselves to poets such as Robin Coste Lewis, Fred Moten, Anne Boyer, Alice Notley, and more. The poems that we make are places of energy and change, risk and shelter, healing and engagement.
This event takes place in the Valade Gallery, first floor of the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education, 460 W. Baltimore, Detroit.
