Hamtramck Free School welcomes poets Asia Johnson and Molli Spalter for a reading generously hosted at Office Space Gallery.
Asia Johnson, a Detroit native, is an activist and mentor, criminal justice reform soldier, as well as a writer and poet. Her work centers around pain, equality, the carceral state, and the search for fulfillment. As a returning citizen she has spoken on many panels and radio shows concerning mass incarceration. Currently working on a short film on the trauma to prison pipeline, her art has taken a turn towards the visual. She is a former Room Project Fellow and a current Right of Return Fellow. A student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Asia’s work can be seen in numerous publications. Her chapbook, An Exorcism was released in 2017.

Molli Spalter is a poet and PhD student in Literary and Cultural Studies at Wayne State University where she serves as the Managing Editor of Criticism: A Quarterly for Literature and the Arts. Molli’s poetry, which seeks to pair the gritty grotesquerie and perfect dreaminess of feminism and femininity has appeared in Rust + Moth and Rogue Agent Journal. She has a book chapter forthcoming this fall in the Wiley E. Blackwell Companion to Feminist Studies titled “Feminism and Social Movements.”

Doors at 6:30, reading at 7pm. Contact Walter Lucken with questions at [email protected].

Office Space Gallery is located at 2870 Grand Blvd E., Detroit MI 48202-3130, on October 25th, 2019.
