Prisons and the criminal justice system perpetuate violence, fail to support survivors of violence, fail to change offenders, and fail to transform the social and cultural conditions that lead to violence.  Transformative justice is a liberatory alternative to criminalization and incarceration, which relies on community accountability and an anti-oppression framework.

This course is a reading group to study both transformative justice and its predecessor, restorative justice. Restorative justice “is a process to involve, to the extent possible, those who have a stake in a specific offense to collectively identify and address harms, needs and obligations in order to heal and put things as right as possible” (Howard Zinn). We will discuss how to apply both models of justice to sexual assault and intimate partner abuse. We will explore ways of practicing community accountability to respond to the harms of interpersonal violence and to dismantle its roots.
